Somiedo Natural Park, south of Asturias, offers a natural and ethnographic spectacle in the five valleys that form its territory, one of the last of Spain in which the brown bear lives.
A paradise for nature lovers. That is the Parque Natural de Somiedo, an area of hundred square miles that offers the traveler a spectacular valleys and shady forests south of Asturias, on the boundary with the province of León. One of the last refuges of the grizzly bear, its lakes and its unique ethnographic values characterize it and endow it with attractive characteristics compared to other territories.
The difficult living conditions that once prevailed in the five valleys that form the territory of Somiedo have allowed it be retained vestiges of the past, barns and houses that still account, decades later, the work that farmers and "vaqueiros "played for centuries in these lands. They did it in a scenario where forests cover almost one quarter of the council, dominated by beech and oak. A place to grouse and the largest surviving core of the Peninsula brown bears, endangered species to which it follows with respect. These men worked leather, in short, one of the best preserved mountain ecosystems in Spain and Portugal. They were employing vaqueiros Somiedo pastures during the spring and summer for use in livestock. Could walk up to one hundred kilometers from the villages of the marina at brañas summer, and were the architects of a typical rural architecture of the area still preserved samples, "teito" or huts covered with wild bushes.
If you had to mention a vital staging point in the vast territory of Somiedo, surely one of them was the Lake Valley, the largest of Asturias, of glacial origin and more than 1500 meters. The municipality, in fact, characterized by a large number of lakes, most located in small but spectacular enclaves. Nor can we miss a visit to La Peral, south of the reserve. This location has the distinction of being one of the last towns to those who still continue moving in the summer vaqueiros of appeal. Two other locations are recommended Somiedo Pola, the capital of the council, and Saliencia the end of the valley of the same name and near which are some of the most interesting groups brañas environment. The one on the Pornacal, with more than thirty cottages "Teito" is one that does not belong in our journey.
