Valladolid is a Spanish city located in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, the capital of the province and autonomous community of Castile and Leon. Account, according to 2007 census data, with a population of 316,564 inhabitants, making it the 13th largest city in Spain. Meanwhile, the metropolitan area, comprising 23 municipalities with a population of 400,000, is the 20th in Spain.
Although there are signs of settlements belonging to the Lower Palaeolithic, Valladolid did not have a stable population to the Middle Ages. During the repopulation of the Plateau, Alfonso VI instructed the Count Peter Ansúrez its settlement, granting the manor of the same in 1072. From this date begins its growth by acquiring other institutions; Church College, University or Royal Palace. This allowed him to become the seat of the Castilian court, and later, between 1601 and 1606, capital of the Spanish Empire, until the capital moved permanently to Madrid. Thereafter begins a period of decline that will be saved only with the arrival of the railroad in the nineteenth century and the industrialization of the city, and in the twentieth century.
It preserves an interesting old town historic, composed of houses, palaces, churches, plazas, avenues and parks, along with an important heritage museum. Among the cultural events held in the city include the Easter Week in Valladolid and Valladolid International Film (SEMINCI), among others.
